We’ve worked with Summerhill’s Innkeeper and Chef, Mara Jernigan, to carefully curate the quintessential Okanagan cycling vacation. The essential ingredients? Stunning rides, spectacular food, carefully selected activities and a guesthouse set aside just for you, the Giro guest. Rides through rolling vineyards and over historic rail trestles, morning yoga overlooking the lake, cooking lessons in the guesthouse kitchen, a guided tour of an Okanagan vineyard, an exclusive long table dinner and watching the sun slip behind the westside mountains from your private deck. Your guesthouse host - Mara Jernigan
Mara Jernigan is a Canadian born chef, manager and cooking instructor specializing in sustainable tourism and local food systems..
Her 30 year career includes an apprenticeship in Europe and Toronto and the opening of Western Canada’s first farm to table cooking school. She established B.C.’s Feast of Fields and one of Canada’s first Slow Food chapters. For 10 years she was the Canadian representative to the International Slow Food Ark of Taste, she established the first Citta Slow in North America in Cowichan Bay and was the first elected President of Slow Food Canada.
Each fall, Mara also hosts off the beaten path culinary tours of Italy.
Day by Day:
Day One - After your check in at the Summerhill Estate House, join us for a welcome reception by the pool where you’ll be introduced to the Giro Team and to Summerhill’s Culinary Director and your host, Mara Jernigan. After the reception, we’ll take a short walk through the vineyards to Summerhill Winery for a private tour and then you’ll have dinner at Summerhill’s Organic Bistro. After dinner, stroll back to the guesthouse and enjoy the Okanagan sunset before bed. Tomorrow, great cycling awaits!
Dinner - Enjoy the Okanagan in season at Summerhill’s own Organic Bistro, featuring ingredients sourced from local suppliers and their own Biodynamic gardens.
Day Two - This morning, Mara and her team serves a gourmet breakfast while we load up you bikes and get ready. We’ll meet you at the Estate House and take a short shuttle drive to Lake Country, just north of Kelowna. Today’s ride starts through the historic rolling orchards and vineyards of one of the Okanagan’s prime agricultural regions before descending to small village of Okanagan Centre. Then we climb back over the bench and finish with a scenic loop on a quiet bike path around Wood Lake. After you have a chance to rest at the guesthouse the Giro shuttle will pick you up for a short guided walking tour of downtown Kelowna featuring some fascinating historical tidbits and a sampling of Kelowna’s favorite micro-brews and spirits. The dinner destination tonight will be the group’s choice from our hand-picked short list of downtown Kelowna’s favorite casual dining destinations. Tonight, we’ve curated the best from the heart of Kelowna. When you’re ready, we’ll shuttle you back to the Estate House for a great nights sleep"
Lunch - A gourmet al fresco lunch from Waterfront Café will be served by the Giro Team en route.
Dinner - Wood Fired Pizzas, charcuterie, tapas, sushi, gourmet burgers – there are no wrong choices here. We’ve selected our favorite downtown go-tos for tasty comfort food and we’ll let the group decide where they want to go (the majority rules in this case).
Spare Time Option - Book a relaxation massage in the afternoon from Giro’s own massage therapist. Don’t stress, we’ll come to you at the guesthouse. After all, this is a relaxation massage.
Day Three Today, if you’re up for it, you can join us for a morning yoga session by the pool overlooking the vineyards. Then, enjoy another incredible breakfast from Mara! When you’re ready to ride, we have a treat for you! Today, we’ll shuttle you up to Myra Canyon and you’ll ride the historic Kettle Valley Railway trail. We start with 18 historic trestles laced around the canyon and make a quick stop where we’ll hunt for archeological clues at the site of a long-abandoned worker’s camp. Then, it’s off to our lunch stop at the rustic Chute Lake Resort. After, we’ll start our descent to Penticton, through old growth Ponderosa Pine forests and along a ridge high above Okanagan Lake. We finish with a rolling ride through the vineyards of scenic Naramata, with one last stop for Gita Peterson’s famous Poplar Grove cheese. The Giro Shuttle will pick you up in Penticton and take you back to the Guesthouse where you can refresh yourself before supper at your choice of two fabulous dining destinations in Kelowna’s Mission area.
Lunch - An al-fresco lunch from the Bench Market served by the Giro Team at historic Chute Lake Resort.
Dinner - Tonight, the group can choose from a 3-course fixed menu at Basil and Mint or a la carte dining at one of Giro’s favorite bistros, The Fixx.
Spare Time Option - Join us for an early morning yoga class overlooking Lake Okanagan before breakfast. It’s a wonderful way to stretch out those muscles after a day of cycling.
Day Four It’s our last day of cycling and we’ve put together a spectacular itinerary for you. After breakfast at the guesthouse, we’ll get on the bikes and ride right from your front door, first riding along scenic Lakeshore Drive and then explore the agricultural riches of East Kelowna. We’ll do a little foraging with some of our farming friends in the area and learn more about the history of agriculture in the region. Along the way, choose carefully, because you’ll actually be sourcing the ingredients for tonight’s dinner! We’ll enjoy a charcuterie lunch at Spierhead Winery and then ride back to the guesthouse. There, Chef Mara will guide you through a culinary workshop where you’ll create a dish that you’ll enjoy at tonight’s wind up event, a hosted Chef’s Long Table dinner at the Estate house. It will be an evening to remember, with 5 spectacular courses prepared by Chef Mara. Then we’ll share a final evening of music and memories by the pool, under the stars of an Okanagan sky. Lunch - The Giro team will meet you at Spierhead Winery with a charcuterie lunch and tasting afterwards.
Dinner - Chef Mara will prepare a wonderful 5 course private long table dinner just for you.
Spare Time Option - Join Chef Mara for a culinary workshop where you'll learn how to prepare one of the courses to be served at tonight's dinner
Day Five This morning, enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the Guesthouse before your travels home. If you’re not quite ready to leave the Okanagan, ask us about other ideas to extend your stay!

The Summerhill Guesthouse
“We are constantly looking for unique accommodation partners that immerse you in the spirit and feel of the Okanagan Valley. We fell in love with the Summerhill Estate Guesthouse the minute we saw it.
This was the private home of Summerhill Winery owner Stephen Cipes. It was recently converted into a guest house, but rather than “wipe the slate clean” the decision was made to retain the original character and patina of the home. It’s a classic example of 80’s west coast architecture, with numerous personal mementos of the many years Stephen and his family spent in this home. It features four guest bedrooms, each with a private bathroom (two of the upstairs rooms have their bathrooms just across the hallway). There are ample common guest sitting areas, including a massive kitchen where the cooking classes are held. Each room opens onto a private deck or patio overlooking the vineyards and Okanagan Lake. A heated pool is adjacent to the guest house. Spectacular gourmet breakfasts are served each morning by Mara Jernigan and her staff.
